88 Scott's Public Art Artist Honoured with Prestigious Award

Concert is elated to congratulate Cecil Balmond, the artist selected for the public art installation at 88 Scott, on receiving the 2016 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture from the University of Virginia. Established in 1966, this annual award is the highest honour the University can bestow and has recognized the exemplary contributions of such recipients as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson and Frank Gehry.

An internationally renowned artist, architect and engineer, Cecil Balmond has been described as one of the most significant creators of his generation. His distinguished portfolio includes public art works such as the “Star of Caledonia”, a world-class sculptural icon to mark the England-Scotland border, as well as Britain’s largest sculpture, the “ArcelorMittal Orbit”, created in collaboration with renowned sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

Concert worked closely with Public Art Management and the Toronto Public Art Commission to develop the Public Art Plan for 88 Scott, a 58-storey mixed use development in downtown Toronto. The Public Art Jury selected Balmond Studio’s “Spectrum” proposal from more than 50 responses received through an international Call for Artists.

Spectrum is an engaging new public art installation. Its unique manipulation of light and colour resonates through the space with each component carefully designed using a proportional system governed by the golden ratio. The work offers syncopated experiences on multiple scales, acting as an artistic focal point for the new development. Spectrum represents an ongoing incentive to integrate new developments into a community by engaging residents and visitors through the use of public art.

Concert is proud to be involved with Cecil Balmond’s second public art installation in Canada.

Located in the heart of the Financial District at Scott Street and Wellington Street, 88 Scott consists of a five-storey podium of boutique office and retail space with a 58-storey condominium tower containing 523 homes. Visit www.88Scott.com for more information.
