Exclusively owned by Canadian union and management pension plans, Concert is involved in developing rental apartments, condominium homes and retirement communities, acquiring and developing commercial, industrial and infrastructure properties and in property management in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
Since 1989, Concert has undertaken developments in excess of $3.4 billion, developed nearly 12,000 rental and condominium homes, and built or acquired over 11.5 million square feet of income-producing property. We are proud to have created more than 28 million person-hours of on-site union employment and to have contributed in excess of $123 million to affiliated union pension, health and welfare plans.
Our foundation includes the strength and backing of Canadians represented by the union and management pension plans who own the company, a corporate philosophy where integrity in all dealings and community values are key, and a dedicated team of professionals.
Concert was established in 1989 with a mandate to provide economically priced rental housing in British Columbia. This unique partnership involving the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia, union and management pension funds and private investors was initiated with a start-up capitalization of $27 million.
In 1992, Concert expanded its real estate activities to include the development of multi-family, condominium housing to meet a need for quality, affordable home ownership, and to apply the diverse development expertise and capabilities of the company.
In 1996, Concert began acquiring and developing industrial and commercial properties to create new profit centres and to capitalize on the significant range of professional expertise within the Concert team. Our professional experience and the quality of our construction has also provided us with the opportunity to manage a variety of real estate development projects for other groups throughout British Columbia.
In 2001, Concert expanded its operations into the Ontario market. The primary focus of this expansion was initially to develop and manage new “assured” rental housing in alliance with the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (“OMERS”). This commitment has now been expanded to include a unique retirement community and condominium development.
Adding yet another dimension to its residential development portfolio, Concert is now actively involved in the development of retirement communities designed to enhance the lives of active seniors having already completed three such communities in British Columbia and Ontario.
Today, Concert is a 100 per cent pension fund owned real estate corporation with activities in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
