One area of special importance to Concert, and our industry, that was particularly hit hard by COVID-19 is education and in particular, trades training institutions. The graduates that come out of trades training programs comprise our future employees and have the specialized skills needed for our sector to grow and thrive.
For over 20 years Concert has held an annual golf tournament – both in Vancouver and Toronto – to raise much-needed funds for trades training in Canada, including programs at BCIT, Camosun College, George Brown College and Hammer Heads. Unfortunately, with ongoing restrictions on large gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, Concert has made the decision to cancel both events this year.
However, the need for funding has never been greater, with many students losing service jobs and buckling under enormous financial strain and uncertainty. Current emergency support provided by the provincial and federal governments still falls short, and they are struggling to pay for rent, basic living expenses and technology to support their transition to online classes.
In 2019, with the support of many donors, we collectively raised over $350,000 that directly supported trades training across Canada. Our aim is to meet or exceed that goal again this year. We hope that you will consider contributing. To show our ongoing commitment, Concert will match funds raised up to $50,000.
Together we have the chance to shape the future for those who will shape ours, and in doing so build a people-first future of strong, resilient, sustainable, inclusive Canadian communities.
