People-first spotlight: Joyce Chen

Our people are what make us who we are, and we look forward to sharing their stories with you. This month we shine the spotlight on Joyce Chen, our Director, People Experience:

In your own words, please describe your role:

I work on continuously improving Concert’s people policies, programs and systems. Together, with an amazing team, we partner with leaders and employees to co-create a work environment and experience that we are proud of.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the Concert team?

When I first learned about an opportunity to work for Concert, I asked people within the development industry about their thoughts on Concert. They had nothing but good things to say. Simply put, we’re probably not what you’d expect. Look past the job you’re considering and ask someone who works there, why they work there.

Personally, I’m motivated by the fact that the organization is truly dedicated to their staff. In my line of work, it’s part of my job to find ways to make things better for employees and the company – and at Concert, my advice and expertise is valued and recognized.

How do Concert’s values and mission align with your personal values?

In the work that I do, and as a mother of two little humans who will contribute to our future, it’s of the utmost importance to think about the impact of our actions on the people around us. Concert’s focus on building a people-first future is exactly that.

What is your favourite memory of your time with Concert?

My first day! It was right as BC went into lockdown and I wasn’t sure how I’d get onboarded while the company was super busy trying to get staff set up to work from home. By the time my first day rolled around, I had all my devices delivered to my home, and a team of experts online and ready to welcome me to the company. To this day, I still see that same commitment to new staff – it’s pretty amazing.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?

I like exercising and I love listening to music. My favourite thing to do is to listen to a new album while out for a run on a cool summer night.
